Continuing with its tradition to introduce new plants and livestock to the area, Pandak Farms launched a pilot project to grow papaya. Hybrid papaya seeds were sown in tubes in February. The papaya nursery is now being shifted to the ground from the tubes where they will be covered by high tunnels to protect them from several nights with near freezing temperature in winter. Frost is a particular challenge for topical plants grown in colder regions. It is the first time that papaya is being grown in Attock district (northern Punjab) where Pandak Farms is located. Pandak Farms will expand the area of papaya cultivation once the pilot project is successful. Currently, high tunnels at Pandak Farms are used to grow off-season cucumber, bitter gourd, eggplant, capsicum and green chilies. Papaya will be a new addition to the tunnel farming at Pandak.
